Abstract

This project explores the integration of virtualization and operating systems in a simulated IT environment for SOV Model Agency, a fictional modeling agency. Our team strategically selects software and hardware to understand the transformative impact of technology on small businesses. Focusing on role-specific technological requirements, we cover tasks from booking management to financial administration and social media curation. 

Examining the contemporary state of modeling agencies, we observe the dynamic influence of digital technology and address challenges posed by industry oversaturation. Essential roles, such as financial managers, bookers, photographers, and social media managers, underscore the critical interplay of technology in the modeling industry. This project aims to provide practical insights into the relationship between technology and fashion business dynamics, contributing to innovation and efficiency enhancement in small-scale enterprises.

Introduction

In this project, we are going to explore the world of virtualization and operating systems, with a practical focus on creating a set of virtual machines to mimic the IT setup of a make-believe model agency, SOV Model Agency. Our project team consists of four members, each assigned to fulfill distinct roles within the agency. The aim of this project is to explore how to select the right software applications, choose compatible operating systems, and allocate suitable computer resources. Our goal is to create a strong and efficient digital workspace tailored to the unique needs of each role within the agency.

SOV Model Agency involves various roles, from managing bookings and models/clients to handling digital marketing, social media management, financial administration and photography, including photo and video editing [1]. These different roles come with specific technological requirements, which will guide our choices of software and hardware.

In a real-world context, a model agency depends on a well-coordinated use of operating systems and software applications, optimized to serve each role effectively [1]. Through our virtualization project, we want to better understand how to build a digital environment that meets these exact needs.

By carefully selecting the right combination of software, operating systems and hardware, our project aims to show how technology can significantly improve the productivity and functionality of a small business. This project is a tangible example of how we can apply operating systems and virtualization to create a practical virtual workspace that aligns with the specific requirements of SOV Model Agency.

This comprehensive exploration not only showcases our grasp of virtualization complexities but also highlights our ability to use this knowledge to address real business challenges. It provides an exciting opportunity to bridge the gap between theoretical understanding and practical implementation.


State Of the Art

The state of the art in modeling agencies has seen significant transformations over the years, with digital technology playing a crucial role. The advent of social media platforms has provided models with a platform to showcase their work and connect with potential clients directly. This has led to the emergence of “influencer models” [2], who leverage their online following to secure modeling gigs1(GIGs: live performances or jobs).

Methodology

1. Preliminary Study

Analysis of the Modeling Agency Market: We initiated our research with an analysis of the modeling agency market and sector. Our goal was to understand the exact operations of a modeling agency, the challenges these companies face, and most importantly, the job positions this industry encompasses. To achieve this, we utilized several search engines such as Google, Bing IA, Duck Duck GO, Yahoo, etc., and selected phrases and terms like “What a Modeling agency does” [19], “Challenges within the modeling agency” [19]. Our conclusion from that analysis, as can be seen in our State of the Art, was that a modeling agency typically requires a person to manage the accounts [19].

Results

In this part of our project, we present the outcomes of our efforts to configure virtual workstations for different roles within the SOV Model Agency. These results reflect our journey in aligning the technological needs of each role with suitable virtual environments. The configurations detailed in the following tables are the culmination of our practical application of virtualization, balancing each role's requirements with the available resources and software.




Conclusions and Future Work

When we think about our work, it becomes evident that there can be room for development and improvement. One of them would be to switch to macOS, which would provide us with a better user interface, a range of innovative tools, and seamless connectivity with the Apple ecosystem. We would be able to utilize the unique features and design principles that macOS offers thanks to this modification, which would increase Operating Systems and Virtualization our efficiency and productivity at work. Additionally, by integrating macOS into our workflow, we can benefit from seamless integration with other Apple devices, facilitating cross-platform collaboration and enhancing the overall user experience.

Unfortunately, our previous attempts to virtualize macOS were not successful; nonetheless, that would be something we would like to address more thoroughly in future work. We might be able to create a virtual macOS environment if we put in more work and apply a variety of strategies.

In future projects, we hope to expand the scope of our work by adding more software solutions made especially for a modeling agency's particular needs. Understanding how the industry is constantly changing and how important it is to stay up to date with technology, our goal would be to increase the range of tools that are available. The aim of this extension is to improve overall efficiency and effectiveness by addressing various aspects of modeling processes. Our desire to continuously investigate and incorporate new software applications stems from our dedication to creativity and flexibility, which makes sure that our upcoming projects offer an even more extensive and state-of-the-art technological foundation for the modeling business.
